Name of Hotel: The Resort at Pelican Hill
Location: Newport Beach, CA
Rating*: 4/5 (*Rating Scale – 1: Terrible, 2: Poor, 3: Average, 4: Very Good, 5: Excellent)
Type of Traveler: Family, Reunion, Romantic Getaway, Girlfriend Getaways
Best Time of Year: Four season resort
Key Features: The pool at Pelican Hill resort is their strongest attribute. It is beautiful and has nice views of the Pacific. It’s even bigger than it looks in photos. It definitely has a “wow” factor!
I’m not a huge fan of giant resorts and was fortunate enough to stay in the Villas instead of the main resort. We were in a butler- serviced, three-bedroom villa that was comfortably furnished and filled with many amenities to make the stay easy. The Villa also include a private pool and restaurant which was helpful on a crowded Memorial Day weekend.
Drawbacks: I didn’t care for the quality of the food in any of the restaurants at the resort. I would give the food quality in general a B rating. I would expect better menu options and execution in a resort like this.
Also, this is a giant, crowded resort so keep that in mind if you prefer small boutique hotels. We were there over Memorial Day weekend and had a two hour wait for lunch and really were unable to get pool chairs without advance planning.
The drawback of the Villa’s is that you need to call for a car service to pick you up to take you to the main resort. We had friends in the main resort and it was a hassle to hook up.
While we loved staying in the Villa area, I wish the hotel had explained the location to me in advance so I understood how far away they were from the hotel.
Side Notes: The area was a lot of fun for the adults and kids. We spent time hiking in the hills, on the beach and shopping in Laguna Beach. There’s plenty more to do in Newport Beach and as always, I wish we had more time.
