Hip2Travel Hotel Review
Name of Hotel: Hotel Lumen, a Klimpton Hotel
Location: Dallas, TX (Highland Park neighborhood)
Rating*: 4/5 (*Rating Scale – 1: Terrible, 2: Poor, 3: Average, 4: Very Good, 5: Excellent)
Type of Traveler: This hotel seems to be specifically designed for Southern Methodist University (SMU) or if you are visiting friends and family in the area.
Best Time of Year: During the academic school year (too hot to go in the summer, anyway!)
Key Features: Pool, decent restaurant, close proximity to SMU
Drawbacks: Located on a busy street, unappealing views out the back end of the hotel, not recommended for a general trip to Dallas (there are better location options)
Side Notes: I went to SMU in the 80s and hardly remember what this hotel was originally. I think I went here once to visit a friend and all I remember is that it was very dark! Fortunately that is not the case now. This clean, sleek open hotel is a great example of how to turn an older style motel into a crisp new hotel.
I’m not sure if you would stay here for any other reason than a campus visit to Southern Methodist University (SMU) which was the purpose of my stay. SMU is my alma mater and now that I have a Junior in my household SMU was one of our first college visit stops.
You absolutely cannot beat the convenience of the hotel from campus (spitting distance) and even if you aren’t here for SMU it’s not a bad spot to stay. It’s close to the famed Highland Park Village outdoor shopping complex, North Park Mall, downtown Dallas and the nightlife on McKinney Avenue.
When you stay in a lot of hotels it’s usually the little things that make a hotel standout. In this case, the free wine in the lobby every evening made this hotel a big winner for me. I love to not be nickeled and dimed for everything when I travel and a complimentary glass of wine and light snacks made me feel valued as a customer.
